- You can contact BT by phone or live chat if you have a problem with your broadband
What is BT?
BT is the UK’s biggest landline and broadband provider. As the world’s oldest communications company, BT traces its origins back to the Electric Telegraph Company in 1846. It’s had the monopoly on telecoms supply in the UK for many years and still leads today.
BT owns Openreach, which connects most of the country to the internet and supplies big provider names like:
In 2016, BT Group acquired competitor EE and now uses the EE brand to market its flagship consumer products.
Despite acquiring Plusnet in 2007, BT only brought it directly into its own Consumer Division in 2018, with a focus on marketing more budget-friendly broadband products.
Who owns BT?
As a publicly traded company on the London Stock Exchange, BT Group isn’t owned by a single entity. Instead, it operates as a PLC, answering to its board and shareholders rather than one sole owner.
Currently, the largest shareholder in BT Group is Bharti Enterprises, with a 24.5%-24.95% stake, followed by Deutsche Telekom (approx. 12%). Other major shareholders include Carlos Slim (approx. 3.2%-3.98% through Control Empresarial de Capitales) and institutional investors like BlackRock and Vanguard.
Allison Kirkby has served as Chief Executive of BT Group since 2024.
Benefits of BT broadband deals
Some benefits of BT broadband deals include:
- Stay Fast Guarantee - A promise that your speed will stay above the stated minimum, or you get £20 back
- Complete Wi-Fi - You get a £100 bill credit if there isn’t reliable Wi-Fi in all parts of your home
- Free upgrading - If your home isn’t yet on full fibre and you choose BT broadband, you should receive a free upgrade as soon as it’s available in your area
- BT Halo - Free tech support seven days a week
- Local call centres - All BT call centres are based in the UK and Ireland
BT broadband packages: Phone, TV and internet
BT offers a range of different packages and add-ons, so you can personalise your broadband deal with what matters to you.
BT broadband only deals
If you don’t use your landline, BT can provide a straightforward internet connection with no home phone needed.
Just remember, you won’t be able to make or receive incoming calls on a landline if you opt for broadband only. This includes calls to emergency services.
You can move to another provider and get a home phone if you’ve taken out broadband without a home phone with BT. But you won’t be able to reclaim your old home phone number. You’ll be given a new number instead.
Compare broadband only deals to see if this is the right package type for you.
BT broadband and TV packages
BT’s TV offering now comes under the EE brand.
There are five EE TV packages:
- Entertainment
- Sport
- Big Entertainment
- Big Sport
- Full Works
If you’re already a BT broadband customer, you can easily add an EE TV package to your plan. The cheapest option is Entertainment at £22 a month and the priciest is Full Works at £88 a month.
BT broadband and phone packages
For combined BT broadband and landline deals, the landline service is treated as an add-on to the broadband package.
There are two options for the landline component:
- Pay as you go - All calls to UK landlines and mobile at the same price per minute, whatever time of day it is
- Unlimited minutes - All calls you make to UK landlines or mobiles are covered by the monthly payment
If you make a lot of international calls, there are two optional extras:
- Friends & Family International (cheap rates)
- International Freedom (inclusive calls to some places, cheap rates for others)
BT also offers landline-only deals for people who want a home phone but don’t want BT broadband.
You get the same two options as with the landline component of a bundled deal: Pay As You Go or Unlimited Minutes. But at £31.20 for PAYG and £49.20 for Unlimited, it’s more expensive to get BT phone service separately from your broadband than it is to combine the two.
If you want a landline but don’t want any kind of internet service, you might be eligible for a discounted home phone service from BT. This is available exclusively for BT customers not using broadband.
Call 0800 587 0083 to find out if you qualify.
BT landline changes
The way we use landlines in the UK is changing and BT is leading this change.
Via Openreach, BT is deactivating the old network of copper telephone cables and replacing them with an internet phone service called Digital Voice.
When you change or upgrade your landline deal, BT will move you to the new service.
What else does BT broadband include?
There are lots of security features included as standard with BT broadband:
- Virus protection from NortonTM
- BT Web Protect to warn you about potentially harmful websites
- Parental controls to help keep your child safe online
BT broadband and mobile packages
If you’re a BT Halo customer, you can get an EE SIM with unlimited data thanks to its No Limits plan.
For £25 a month, you also get an unlimited home phone plan worth £12 a month.
BT Halo also lets you connect to EE’s 4G network if your broadband goes down. When you contact BT and report a fault, you’ll receive a 4G Mini Hub. Plus, if you have a mobile plan on your BT account, they’ll provide free unlimited data on all associated phones within an hour of reporting the fault.
The same applies if you've shared BT Halo benefits with any other BT Mobile customers living in your home, so they'll get free data too.
All this is only valid for however long the fault lasts.
If you’re interested in adding extras alongside home internet, compare broadband bundles to make sure you’ll get the best value for your needs.
BT broadband speeds
These are the typical speeds you’ll get with BT broadband:
- Fibre Essential - 35-36 Mbps (even with a 32 Mbps guarantee, this is still at the low end of superfast and slow by current standards)
- Fibre 1 - 50Mbps (25 Mbps guarantee)
- Fibre 2 - 74 Mbps (34 Mbps guarantee)
- Full Fibre 300 - 300 Mbps (150 Mbps guarantee)
- Full Fibre 500 - 500 Mbps (425 Mbps guarantee)
- Full Fibre 900 - 900 Mbps (700 Mbps guarantee)
While BT broadband's top speed is 900 Mbps (not quite gigabit broadband), it's still very quick.
If your home doesn’t have a full fibre connection, the maximum possible speed BT offers is 74 Mbps via hybrid fibre.
Full fibre gives you a wider range of speeds available from BT broadband. But faster speeds are usually more expensive, so work out what broadband speed you need before comparing to avoid overpaying.
For those still on ADSL broadband, top speeds will be around 11 Mbps. Since this technology is being phased out anyway, it’s time to see if you can upgrade to hybrid or full fibre.
Our postcode checker gives an up-to-date view of what’s available at your address.
How much is BT broadband?
Currently, BT broadband prices are as follows:
- Fibre Essential - £26.99
- Fibre 1 - £26.99
- Fibre 2 - £27.99
- Full Fibre 300 - £32.99
- Full Fibre 500 - £34.99
- Full Fibre 900 - £37.99
There are no upfront costs for any BT broadband packages.
But you should expect mid-contract price rises. These are currently set to go up by around £4 in March each year.
How long are BT broadband contracts?
Most BT broadband contracts are for 24 months. Its social tariff is for 12 months. And BT occasionally offers some 12-month broadband deals. But you’ll likely pay more in the long run.
Currently, BT doesn’t offer one-month rolling contracts to new customers.
Instead, check out short-term and no contract broadband deals from other providers on our panel.

You’ll be able to see what’s available at your home. Also, you’ve got the option to sort by important criteria like price and speed to find the right deal for you.
Once you find a plan you like, simply hit “Get deal” to finish signing up.
How do I get BT broadband if I’m moving house?
If you’re a BT broadband customer moving house but want to stay on the same contract, all you need to do is:
- Log in to your BT account
- Provide details of your new address and moving date
- Bring your existing router to plug in on move day
BT requires two weeks’ notice to get your new connection sorted, but it might be ready sooner.
They won’t usually charge you if you’re moving house and staying on the same deal.
The only exception would be if you’re still on a landline-only package or a copper broadband package and there’s no existing line to your new home. In which case, you could end up paying anywhere from £30 to £140 if a new, physical landline needs installing, or if your line is inactive and requires an engineer visit.
Switching to BT broadband
You can switch to BT broadband deals easily thanks to One Touch Switch.
When you sign up, BT will handle the whole process, including telling your existing provider that you’re leaving.
BT will then make arrangements to activate your new broadband service on an agreed date.
Your existing broadband service will still be available until the day BT’s goes live, so you shouldn’t have any down time.
Can I switch to BT broadband for free?
If the fixed term of your contract is over, you’re free to switch to BT broadband or any other provider. And because BT doesn’t include any sign-up charges, you can join BT without paying anything upfront.
But if you’re still in contract with your existing provider, you’ll probably have to pay an exit fee to switch.

FAQs
How long does BT broadband take to set up?
You can set up BT broadband as soon as your router arrives.
All you need to do is connect your router to an Openreach modem or master socket and it should let you get online, provided it’s after the activation date shown on your order confirmation.
Upgrading from hybrid fibre or ADSL to full fibre usually adds to the overall setup time because you’ll need an engineer to install your fibre connection first. If this is required, you’ll need to make an installation appointment when confirming your order.
How do I get cheap BT broadband deals?
Compare BT broadband deals at the top of this page and filter by price to see which are most affordable.
When comparing your options, make sure you look at the total price for the whole term of the contract and don’t forget about the yearly price increases.
What routers come with BT broadband?
If you’re getting a new BT broadband package, you’ll likely receive the Smart Hub 2. This is BT’s latest model.
But many customers still use older routers. In fact, BT broadband’s current Wi-Fi router offering consists of:
- BT Smart Hub
- BT Smart Hub 2
- BT Home Hub 3
- BT Home Hub 4
- BT Home Hub 5
If you think your router is old and could be due for an upgrade, be sure to check whether or not your original contract has expired.
If it has, compare the latest BT broadband deals to see if you can get better hardware or more bandwidth for your money.
For more information on broadband routers, check out our ultimate router guide.
Can I get BT broadband without a landline?
Yes, you can. With BT’s new full fibre broadband packages, you won’t need a landline to get online as the internet is supplied entirely through fibre cabling.
BT will install an Openreach modem (ONT), which connects directly to your BT Wi-Fi router. This also removes the cost of line rental.
Any phone service you add to your BT broadband will be a digital connection plugged into the router.
While some older BT internet connections still require a landline, BT is set to phase out analogue technology and go digital by the end of January 2027.
Is there a social tariff with BT broadband?
Yes, BT offers social tariff broadband called BT Home Essentials.
It’s for new or existing customers who receive specific benefits, including:
- Universal Credit (all claimants)
- Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income Support
You’ll need to provide your National Insurance number to prove that you’re eligible.
Your BT Home Essentials contract will run for 12 months, after which they’ll run another eligibility check to make sure you still qualify.
Does BT offer broadband for pensioners?
No, BT doesn’t offer broadband specifically aimed at pensioners.
If you’re on Pension Credit, you can apply for BT Home Essentials . This is its social tariff designed to help customers on tighter incomes access fast, reliable broadband at a reduced price.
Existing BT customers can call 0800 800 150 to start the application process.
EE customers can also apply by calling 0800 079 5122.
If you’re upgrading from hybrid fibre or ADSL to full fibre, you’ll need an engineer to install your fibre connection. This appointment will usually add another week or more to the setup time.
